Last week, the students from Oxford and Cambridge were lucky enough to have a language exchange lunch with fellow students from JUE. Not only was it a good opportunity for the JUE students to practice their English but, for most of us, it was our first chance to practice our newly acquired Japanese.
The class lunch was one of our first occasions to try out the many phrases and new words we have been practicing over the last six weeks. Although sometimes learning about ‘Miller-san’ and his various antics can seem disconnected from the ‘real world’, it was reassuring and exciting to be able to use what we knew in order to ask the Japanese students some basic questions in a mutual language-exchange. It was fun helping each other muddle through and rewarding to see how much progress we have made in the short while we’ve been here.
It was good to meet many different students too.
